Why DIY When You Can DIFM?

The do-it-yourself mantra has swept the nation, inspired by everything from television networks like HGTV, to magazine articles on how to re-floor your living room, and YouTube channels demonstrating how to build your own shed. However, many people choose to leave home renovations to the professionals, thus creating a new acronym – DIFM or “do it for me.” This corresponds with the trends of an aging population, where the appeal of DIY projects is dropping, and home owners feel more comfortable hiring professionals for improvement projects.

Just because you can do it yourself, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. Certain jobs, like painting or mounting shelves may be cost-beneficial to complete yourself if you have the spare time. But fields that are specialized enough to have their own professionals – builders, plumbers, electricians, welders, etc. – do so for good reason. (more…)

Sealing and Winterizing your Home

Stop air leaks before they put a toll on your comfort and your wallet this Winter.

Winterize your Home

If you haven’t already, it’s not too late to start getting your home ready for winter. In addition to getting your furnace checked out, we all know it is important to seal your home against air leaks by caulking doors and windows. Doing so not only keeps you and your family warm during those chillier months, it also saves you up to 30% in energy costs. Unfortunately, many well-meaning homeowners who try to seal their homes without help of a professional often overlook some sneaky, drafty spaces and pay a high price for it. When taking measures to keep Jack Frost out this Winter, take a cue from green building expert and President of Energy Vanguard Allison A. Bailes, and think: big…medium…small! Seal the bigger spaces first, the medium holes next, and the smallest culprits last. (more…)

This may seem obvious, but you would be surprised at how many customers I have worked with that become enamored with certain materials or finishes, without considering their specific setting. Actually this has happened to all of us: you see beautifully-stained cabinetry or a rare granite countertop at a friend’s house, and it immediately becomes a ‘must have.’ As with any big-ticket purchase, take a step back, sleep on it, and get a second opinion. Are these materials compatible with the decor of your home? Is premium-dollar granite worth the investment? Does the room offer enough natural light to justify dark finishes? (more…)
